Kebili is the main town of the Nefzaoua, the belt of palm groves wedged between the salt lake and the first dunes. Very few people rent a car here for the town itself — they rent one because everything worth seeing nearby is scattered, and no regular service links those places to each other.

Where you can get to from Kebili

Douz sits about 30 km south on a straight, easy road: that is where the sand takes over and where camel treks and 4x4 excursions set off. Head east and the road runs to the troglodyte houses of Matmata, then on to Gabes and the coast. Head west and you skirt, then cross, the salt flats towards Tozeur. Each of those is a comfortable day out, as long as you do not leave late.

Worth knowing before you drive

The Nefzaoua palm groves produce Deglet Nour dates, and the autumn harvest is the best time to stop in the oasis villages around town. Summer here is brutal — drive in the morning, test the air conditioning when you collect the car, and never head south without filling up first: fuel stations thin out quickly once you are past Douz.

A typical day out of Kebili

Leave early for Douz: thirty kilometres of straight road, the Thursday market if your timing is right, then the edge of the great erg by late morning. The afternoon suits the Nefzaoua oasis villages better — Blidet, Telmine, Jemna — each crossed in a few minutes, where you can still see the seguias that irrigate the palm groves. If you push on to Tozeur, plan the chott crossing for the middle of the day: the road is straight, fully paved, and the mirages are spectacular in strong heat.

Which car, and how far

An economy car handles the entire paved network comfortably, chott crossing included. Anything that starts with sand, however, is not for a passenger car: excursions into the erg south of Douz are done by 4x4 with a local guide, and most rental agreements exclude driving off sealed roads. Check the air conditioning at pick-up — it is the equipment that matters most here.

Fuel discipline and heat

Always fill up in Kebili or Douz before setting off: beyond them stations thin out quickly and some run dry by late afternoon. From June to September, drive in the morning or late afternoon, carry water for everyone, and do not count on continuous mobile coverage on secondary roads. In winter the nights are cold, and blowing sand can cut visibility on the Douz road — slow down rather than stopping in the carriageway.

The Peugeot Traveller answers a very simple problem: moving nine people at once. It is a passenger van, derived from a commercial vehicle but trimmed and finished like a car, with three rows of seats and two sliding side doors that change everything in a tight car park or outside an airport terminal.
