Leave early for Douz: thirty kilometres of straight road, the Thursday market if your timing is right, then the edge of the great erg by late morning. The afternoon suits the Nefzaoua oasis villages better — Blidet, Telmine, Jemna — each crossed in a few minutes, where you can still see the seguias that irrigate the palm groves. If you push on to Tozeur, plan the chott crossing for the middle of the day: the road is straight, fully paved, and the mirages are spectacular in strong heat.

An economy car handles the entire paved network comfortably, chott crossing included. Anything that starts with sand, however, is not for a passenger car: excursions into the erg south of Douz are done by 4x4 with a local guide, and most rental agreements exclude driving off sealed roads. Fuel discipline and heat

Always fill up in Kebili or Douz before setting off: beyond them stations thin out quickly and some run dry by late afternoon. From June to September, drive in the morning or late afternoon, carry water for everyone, and do not count on continuous mobile coverage on secondary roads. In winter the nights are cold, and blowing sand can cut visibility on the Douz road — slow down rather than stopping in the carriageway.
