Monastir Habib Bourguiba international airport (MIR) serves the heart of the tourist Sahel: the Skanes hotel zone practically starts at its fence, central Monastir is under ten kilometres away and Sousse about 25 minutes. Renting at the terminal means going straight from landing to holiday.

The Sahel within reach

From MIR the whole coastline unrolls: Monastir and its Ribat, Sousse and its UNESCO medina, Port El Kantaoui, Mahdia to the south. Kairouan and the El Jem amphitheatre — two listed sites — are each about an hour's drive, the signature excursions of any stay in the region.

MIR handles mostly holiday flights and is strongly seasonal: in summer, book your car several weeks ahead, ideally with the flights. Give your flight times so the partner agency meets you at the terminal exit, and check the agency's own conditions (deposit, minimum age) on the listing before confirming.

Distances from Monastir

The airport is minutes from Monastir itself and a short half-hour from Sousse, which makes it the natural gateway to the Sahel. Mahdia and its peninsula are about forty-five minutes south along the coast road, Kairouan a little over an hour inland, and Hammamet roughly an hour north. El Jem and its amphitheatre, often left out of itineraries, are under an hour away.

Pick-up and first kilometres

The terminal is modest and formalities are quick, so you are on the road fast. The exit gives onto local roads rather than a motorway, with frequent roundabouts and traffic mixing cars, two-wheelers and the occasional cart — take the first few kilometres gently, particularly after a night flight.

The Sahel by car

This is a dense region where towns follow one another: Monastir, Sousse, Msaken, Mahdia. The roads are good but town entrances load up quickly, and parking in central Sousse or along the Monastir corniche takes patience in summer. A city car is the best compromise here: easy to park and ample for the region's short distances. Plan on air conditioning from June to September, and fill up before heading for Kairouan or El Jem, where stations thin out as soon as you leave the coast.

The Peugeot Traveller answers a very simple problem: moving nine people at once. It is a passenger van, derived from a commercial vehicle but trimmed and finished like a car, with three rows of seats and two sliding side doors that change everything in a tight car park or outside an airport terminal.

Its rental logic is one of replacement: a Traveller costs less to hire and to run than two saloons, and the group stays together — genuinely valuable when nobody knows the route. Airport transfers, weddings, groups of friends and extended families are its natural uses.

The one trade-off to plan for is luggage. With all nine seats occupied, the space left behind the third row suits hand luggage, not nine large suitcases. Fold the last row down if you are travelling six or seven with hold baggage, and the vehicle changes scale entirely.
