Distances from Monastir

The airport is minutes from Monastir itself and a short half-hour from Sousse, which makes it the natural gateway to the Sahel. El Jem and its amphitheatre, often left out of itineraries, are under an hour away.

Pick-up and first kilometres

The terminal is modest and formalities are quick, so you are on the road fast. The exit gives onto local roads rather than a motorway, with frequent roundabouts and traffic mixing cars, two-wheelers and the occasional cart — take the first few kilometres gently, particularly after a night flight.

The Sahel by car

This is a dense region where towns follow one another: Monastir, Sousse, Msaken, Mahdia. The roads are good but town entrances load up quickly, and parking in central Sousse or along the Monastir corniche takes patience in summer. A city car is the best compromise here: easy to park and ample for the region's short distances. Plan on air conditioning from June to September, and fill up before heading for Kairouan or El Jem, where stations thin out as soon as you leave the coast.
