Medenine is a junction before it is a destination, and that is exactly what makes it a strong place to start driving: the town sits in the middle of the Jeffara plain, roughly equidistant from the coast, the island and the hilltop villages of the south-east.

The ksour circuit

Medenine's own ksar, with its stacked ghorfas, is right in the town centre, and Ksar Metameur lies a few kilometres west. The real route, though, starts by heading down to Tataouine some 50 km south: Chenini, Douiret and the fortified granaries clinging to the ridge make a full and rewarding day. The approach roads are sealed but narrow and steep — take your time over the last few kilometres.

Towards the sea

Zarzis and its beaches are about an hour east, and Djerba is reached by the El Kantara causeway with no ferry involved. Matmata and Gabes are a similar distance to the north-west. One rental based in Medenine therefore covers the stone desert, the ksour and the coast at once — something no other base in the south-east makes this easy.

Two full days

The first day belongs to the south: down to Tataouine, then the loop of hilltop villages — Chenini in the morning when the light rakes across the granaries, Douiret next, and Ksar Ouled Soltane late in the afternoon. The second turns towards the sea: Zarzis and its beaches, or the crossing to Djerba by the El Kantara causeway, which avoids the ferry. With only one day, choose the ksour: it is the rarest thing Medenine offers, and nothing comparable is reachable from the coast.

Road surface matters here

The main roads to Tataouine, Zarzis and Gabes are wide and in good condition. It is the last few kilometres that need care: the approaches to Chenini and Douiret are paved but narrow, steep and unbarriered, with bends where you cannot see oncoming traffic. Drive slowly, tap the horn on hairpins, and avoid going up after dark. A city car manages this circuit everywhere; an SUV only adds comfort on the stony stretches near the ksour.

On the ground

Medenine is easy to park in, including near the ksar in the town centre. Petrol stations are common on the main axis but scarce once you head inland, so fill up before climbing to the villages. Livestock crosses without warning on the Jeffara plain, especially at sunrise and sunset — that is the region's main hazard, well ahead of road surface.

The Kia Picanto is the city car in its purest definition: under four metres, a tiny turning circle and agility that turns town into easy terrain. Tight parallel parking, narrow streets, scarce spaces — nothing fazes it.

Its other asset is budget: one of the gentlest daily rates in the catalogue and token fuel consumption. For mostly urban use — commutes, errands, appointments — it's hard to be more relevant. For long trips with four people and luggage, step up a category.
