On Djerba, a rental car is the natural way to explore: distances are short, the roads are flat, and the sights are nicely spread out — the souks of Houmt Souk, the Djerbahood street art in Erriadh, the El Ghriba synagogue, the beaches of Sidi Mahres and Seguia, the potters of Guellala.

Driving on the island

Djerba is easy driving: barely any hills, light traffic outside Houmt Souk on market mornings, simple parking almost everywhere. You can loop the whole island in half a day — but it is the stops that make it: a potter's workshop, an empty beach, a traditional menzel farmhouse.

And the mainland?

The island connects to the continent via the Roman causeway at El Kantara in the south-east (towards Zarzis) and the Ajim-Jorf ferry in the west, which takes cars across in minutes. A day trip to the ksour of Tataouine or the troglodyte houses of Matmata is entirely doable — just let the agency know you plan to leave the island. High season runs April to October: book early for summer.

Three loops worth a full day

The north takes a morning: Houmt Souk, the Ras Rmel sand spit, then the Sidi Mahres beaches on the way down to Midoun — around fifty kilometres in all, never more than twenty minutes between stops. The south is slower and more rewarding: Erriadh and its murals, the potters' workshops at Guellala up on the ridge, then Ajim and its fishermen's huts facing the mainland. The third trip leaves the island by the El Kantara causeway, towards the beaches of Zarzis or, further on, the ksour of Medenine.

Which car for the island

An economy car is plenty: everything is paved and flat, and no site requires a track. From June to September the real criterion is air conditioning. The second is boot space — four people with airline luggage will be more comfortable in a compact saloon than a city car, especially if you are staying in Aghir and driving into Houmt Souk each day.

Behind the wheel in Djerba

Secondary roads are unlit, and bicycles, scooters and carts often travel without lights at dusk: avoid crossing the island's interior at night. Houmt Souk is hard to park in on market mornings — leave the car on the edge of town and walk in. Petrol stations are plentiful around Houmt Souk and Midoun and noticeably sparser towards Guellala and Ajim, so fill up before the southern loop. During Ramadan, traffic becomes heavy in the hour before the fast is broken.
