Book before you fly — in high season (summer, school holidays, year-end), airport availability tightens fast. From Tunis-Carthage

How long to reach your destination

Central Tunis is about twenty minutes away, the northern suburbs — Carthage, Sidi Bou Said, La Marsa — between twenty and thirty depending on the hour. Allow roughly an hour for Hammamet on the A1, the same for Bizerte on the A4, and close to two hours for Sousse. Those times almost double at peak periods: a flight landing around 6pm puts you on the road in the middle of the evening rush.

Collecting and returning the car

The airport sits inside the city, some eight kilometres from the centre, so pick-up is on site with no long shuttle. For the return, arrive with margin — the approaches congest quickly at busy times and you need to allow for the condition check before reaching the terminal. Bear in mind too that your first drive, whatever it is, begins with the GP9 exit and the interchange: not the moment to be discovering the gearbox.

Late arrivals and first kilometres

Evening flights are common at Tunis-Carthage. If you are driving at night towards Cap Bon or the Sahel, the A1 is lit and straightforward, but secondary roads are not and vehicles without rear lights are a reality. Keep your licence, agreement and ID accessible: roadside checks are frequent at town entrances, day and night. Finally, fill up before leaving the capital if you are going far — this is where fuel is easiest to find.
