Suzuki Jimny car rental at Tozeur-Nefta Airport

Tozeur-Nefta airport (TOE) is barely four kilometres from Tozeur: this is the direct door into the Jerid and the Tunisian Sahara. Here a rental car is not a comfort but a necessity — the mountain oases, the Chott el-Jérid salt lake and the palm groves of Nefta are scattered across dozens of kilometres with no meaningful public transport.

Straight from the terminal

Tozeur and its brick-built old town are ten minutes away, Nefta and its famous "basket" oasis twenty minutes west. The mountain-oasis loop — Chebika, Tamerza, Midès — is a one-day drive on a fully paved road, fine in a small car. The crossing of the Chott towards Douz, also paved, is one of the most beautiful drives in the country.

Desert rules

Two precautions apply across the region: fill up before every excursion (stations are far apart) and stay on the tarmac — sand tracks like the one to Ong Jemel are 4x4-with-driver territory, and most agencies exclude off-road driving. The season runs October to April; book early for the winter holidays and festival dates.

The only realistic way to see the region

Tozeur-Nefta is a small airport, and that is precisely why a car is close to essential: there is no regular service to the sites people come for. Central Tozeur is under ten minutes away, Nefta about twenty, and the mountain oases of Chebika and Tamerza between forty-five minutes and an hour. Crossing the Chott el-Jerid to Kebili and Douz takes around an hour and a half.

Arriving and leaving

Flights are few and clustered on certain days: take the car on arrival rather than expecting to find one in town the next day, as local supply is limited. For the return, the road down from the mountain oases is long and winding — allow two hours over the check-in time if you are dropping the car off after a final excursion.

Driving in the Jerid

The paved network covers everything worth seeing, and an economy car is enough. What changes here are the conditions: sand regularly sweeps across the carriageway on the Nefta road and turns slippery under braking, glare off the chott is blinding in the middle of the day — sunglasses are not a luxury — and summer routinely passes 45°C. Always fill up in Tozeur before an excursion: there is no station on the chott causeway, nor between Tamerza and Redeyef.

The Suzuki Jimny is a cult mini 4x4: ultra-compact boxy format, genuine four-wheel drive and ground clearance that nothing intimidates. Its charm lies in that personality — people rent it as much for the look as for the ability.

One essential rental note: even in a Jimny, driving off paved roads is excluded by the agencies. Its real rental strengths lie elsewhere — mountain roads, badly broken tarmac, awkward access lanes, and a tiny footprint that parks anywhere. Two rear seats and a small boot: it's a car for an adventurous duo, not a loaded family.
