Djerba-Zarzis airport (DJE), at Mellita, is less than ten kilometres from Houmt Souk: collect your car at the terminal and you are in the souks or at your hotel within a quarter of an hour. On an island where the hotels line the east coast and the sights are scattered, it is the most practical choice from the moment you land.

The island, then the mainland

Once behind the wheel, all of Djerba is within 40 minutes: the Midoun tourist zone, the beaches of Sidi Mahres and Seguia, Djerbahood and the El Ghriba synagogue at the island's heart, the potters of Guellala in the south. And if the mainland calls, the Roman causeway at El Kantara reaches Zarzis in about an hour — Matmata and the ksour of Tataouine make a fine day trip.

The Djerba season runs April to October with a marked summer peak: for July-August, book together with your flights. Give your flight number at booking; the agency waits at the terminal exit, including for late charter arrivals.

From the terminal, where are you heading

Houmt Souk is about fifteen minutes away, the resort strip at Sidi Mahres and Aghir between twenty and thirty by the coast road. Midoun is roughly twenty minutes inland. If you are staying on the mainland, Zarzis is around forty-five minutes via the El Kantara causeway, and Medenine a little over an hour.

Why take the car on arrival

Djerba is an island where almost everything is ten or twenty minutes away but nothing is properly served by public transport. Picking the car up at the terminal avoids a transfer to the hotel followed by a hunt for an agency the next day, and it makes the first evening usable: the east-coast beaches and the terraces of Houmt Souk are reachable straight out of the car park.

Worth knowing before you set off

The coast road is pleasant but very busy in summer at beach hours. Leaving the airport, as everywhere on the island, watch for bicycles and scooters, often unlit at dusk. If your plans include a mainland excursion — the ksour of Tataouine, Matmata — mention it at pick-up: leaving the island by the causeway is fine, but some rental conditions cover long journeys. Fill up in Houmt Souk or Midoun rather than waiting for the south of the island.

The Suzuki Jimny is a cult mini 4x4: ultra-compact boxy format, genuine four-wheel drive and ground clearance that nothing intimidates. Its charm lies in that personality — people rent it as much for the look as for the ability.

One essential rental note: even in a Jimny, driving off paved roads is excluded by the agencies. Its real rental strengths lie elsewhere — mountain roads, badly broken tarmac, awkward access lanes, and a tiny footprint that parks anywhere. Two rear seats and a small boot: it's a car for an adventurous duo, not a loaded family.
