What do you need to show to rent a car in Tunisia? In the vast majority of cases, three things: a valid driving licence, an identity document, and a bank card in the driver's name. The details — how long you have held the licence, minimum age, which cards are accepted — vary from agency to agency, and those details are exactly what stops a handover at the counter.

Here is what to prepare, and what to check before you leave.

The driving licence

This is the central document. Partner agencies generally ask for a licence held for at least one year, sometimes two for the higher vehicle categories.

The licence must be in the name of the person who will actually drive, and it must be the original: a photocopy or a photo on your phone will not do. Check the expiry date before you travel — an expired licence means the vehicle is not handed over, and the booking is usually not refunded in that case.

If you are coming from abroad, your national licence is often enough for a tourist stay. Depending on your country and the length of your stay, an international driving permit may also be requested. When in doubt, travel with both: an international permit never replaces the national licence, it accompanies it.

Proof of identity

Residents present their national identity card (CIN). Visitors present their passport, usually along with proof of entry into the country.

The name on the identity document has to match the licence and the booking. A spelling difference between a passport and a booking — a compound first name, a surname transliterated differently — is enough to hold up the handover. Check that all three agree when you book, not at the counter.

The bank card and the deposit

This is what catches travellers out most often. Almost every agency requires a bank card in the main driver's name to hold the security deposit.

Two practical consequences:

• The card must be in the driver's name. A partner's, parent's or friend's card will generally not be accepted, even if they are standing right there.
• The limit has to cover the deposit. The amount is either held or charged and refunded, depending on the agency. If your weekly limit is too low, the transaction fails at the counter.

Debit cards and prepaid cards are accepted very unevenly from one agency to the next. If that is your only means of payment, check this specific point before booking rather than discovering it on arrival.

Minimum driver age

The minimum age is generally between 21 and 23 depending on the agency and the vehicle category. Some agencies charge a young-driver supplement below a certain age.

These conditions appear on each vehicle listing before you book. They are not negotiable at the counter: an agency that requires 23 will not hand the keys to a 22-year-old, even on a booking that has been paid for.

Additional drivers

If several people are going to drive, each one must be declared as an additional driver and present the same documents: valid licence and identity document.

This matters well beyond the paperwork. An undeclared driver at the wheel falls outside the cover provided by the contract's insurance: in an incident, the financial consequences can land entirely on you. Declaring a second driver usually costs a modest supplement; driving undeclared can cost the price of the car.

The rental contract

At the counter, the agency draws up the rental contract. Take the time to check three things before signing:

1. Dates and times of pick-up and return, and the return location.
2. Included mileage and the fuel level at departure.
3. The vehicle condition report: scratches, wheels, windscreen, tyre condition. Photograph the car from every angle before you drive off, including the interior and the odometer. That is your only protection if the condition is disputed on return.

What to prepare before you go
